It is spread by intimate contact and causes flu-like symptoms. Most cases are mild, but can be fatal.

So far this year, 8600 cases of smallpox and 410 deaths have been recorded in the Congo, as stated last week by the doctor responsible for the disease control program in the country, Cris Kacita,

Meanwhile, the specialist of the University of Rwanda, John Claude Udahemuka, said that the strain that is spreading there is extremely dangerous. Its case fatality rate is around 5 percent in adults and 10 percent in children.
